Student Life at Morton

It was a busy week before Mid-Winter Break! On top of learning, the students were amazing at the Talent Show and students were busy decorating doors!

  • Advisories worked together to create door designs for Black History Month! Judging is this Friday - I can't wait to see the final products!

  • 6th grade Social Studies - "cookie archeologists" dig for artifacts (the chocolate chips)!

  • Pajama Day is everyone's favorite!

  • The Talent Show! Cello, singing, piano playing, cheerleaders, and much, much more!

  • 6th-grade library students in the first round of our “Hey, Did You Know?” work in which they are learning to be more interested than interesting. Their first round is about getting to know important figures in Black History!

  • 8th-grade students read Of Mice and Men together!

Dear Families,

We ended on a high note before mid-winter break. The Talent Show was an example of 75 Morton at our best. The students performing were amazing, and their peers cheered them on from the audience. It was heart-warming and inspiring. The videos will be available to families soon!

As we move into March, our 75 Morton Student Council decided the theme should be HOPE and it's perfect as we head into Spring.  We are all looking forward to the learning and community-building in the month ahead. Check out all that March will bring!

- 6th-grade Ballroom Basix- Councilmember Corey Johnson awarded us $10,000 in CII (Cultural Immigrant Initiative) funding to bring BALLROOM BASIX™ (BBX), a multicultural arts-in-education experience. The socially-distanced "Ballroom, Latin & Line" dancing works to "reconnect" kids after so much "disconnect" during the pandemic. 6th graders will have an orientation on Thursday, and then each Monday through June each class will participate in Ballroom Basix for one period. Be on the lookout for Family dancing events and final performance!

- 7th grade STEM students - In partnership with Endeavor (a NASA STEM educator initiative), 7th grade STEM students will be nature journaling at Hudson River Park two times over the course of the month.

Kyle Lukoff Author Visit -  March 2nd at 8am in the library. The GSA read his book Too Bright Too See and invited him to visit. All students are welcome to attend!

PTSC  - All Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences will be held over zoom once again. Please be on the lookout for an email from your child's advisor on Monday.

  • Dates: Wednesday, March 9th - 5:00 - 7:30pm and Thursday, March 10th - 1 - 3pm

  • All families will be scheduled for 15 minutes blocks of time with their child's advisor. Students will be required to attend PTSC with their family.

  • Be sure to check Jumprope before your conference time.

- Advisory Olympics - Friday, March 18th, 2022 during advisory periods

- ELA State Exams - Tuesday and Wednesday, March 29th and 30th.

Youth-Adult Partnership (YAP) - 75 Morton has been accepted to participate in the Manhattan Team Youth-Adult Partnership (YAP) Community Coaching Group this school year!  The YAP Community Coaching Group is a support network and collective learning space for schools that are dedicated to institutionalizing restorative practices and equity-based action research through authentic youth-adult partnership. Youth and adult participants -- who are active members of their schools’ Restorative Practices and Equity Teams (RPETs) -- learn, exchange, problem-solve, and collaborate through regular group sessions.

To an exciting March!

From Previous Newsletters:

  • UPDATED QUARANTINE POLICY 1/31/22 - Based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health (DOH) guidance, the New York City Department of Education (DOE) has shortened the isolation period for K-12 students with a positive COVID-19 test result from 10 days to 5 days. This means if your child tests positive for COVID-19 and is in kindergarten or higher, your child can return to school on Day 6 if they have no symptoms or their symptoms are improving, and they have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Students returning from isolation on Day 6 must wear a well-fitting mask such as a KN95, KF94, or a cloth mask over a disposable surgical mask on Days 6–10.

  • Please complete the health screening every morning. Please do not send students to school if they have symptoms.
