Dear Families,

As a staff, we have noticed that students need a lot more emotional support and direct teaching of interpersonal skills than in previous years. As I've mentioned in previous newsletters, this was expected but not to the degree to which we have seen over the past month.

Generally, we're seeing student behaviors that are a year or two behind "typical" middle school development (see the chart above). When we think about the impact of interrupted learning, it makes sense that there are gaps in academic skills as well emotional and interpersonal skills. These interruptions are showing up in unexpected places - I've discovered my daughter, a very active 2nd grader, is lagging in her gross-motor skills. My husband and I think this because she didn't have PE for one and a half years, where she would have been learning and practicing skills that we as parents do not even consider.

Many students are demonstrating "lagging skills," and we are working to create advisory lessons and to give the students what they need. One example is on Wednesday, students in all grades will participate in this advisory lesson

This will take love, time, and patience, but we are committed to supporting ALL students.

Valerie
