Dear Families,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful week.
Before the break the PTA sent out a blast announcing our newest faculty member, our comfort dog, Bea. I would like to share a little backstory.
When the DOE comfort dog program began a few years ago, I never ever expected to lead a school that had a comfort dog. I am a little scared of dogs, mildly allergic, and not at all drawn to four-legged things that shed, lick, or bark. And now we welcome Bea. Who knew?
I have not spent time with Bea, but I have spent time with Brian (6th grade ELA ICT teacher), and I trust Brian. Therefore, I know I will fall in “like” with Bea. Brian has owned Bea for eight years and he knew Bea would be a great candidate for this role. Inviting Bea into our community will bring many unexpected magical moments to our school.
Imagine a student who, like me, is nervous around dogs. Imagine this student gaining an understanding of how he or she can manage, confront, and overcome a fear. Think about how this experience can translate to our life moments.
Or imagine a student who gets the opportunity to take a leadership role in caring for Bea, a student who formerly did not have a way of practicing these skills.
And there will be the many other students who will engage with Bea to cheer up, to calm down, to protect, and to feel protected.
And all this with our furry, soft, big-eyed, sweet 75 Morton dog. I may have to put a dog bed in my office.
It is a gift to have a colleague like Brian, who is sharing his family member to help comfort and support our 75 Morton students. And of course, the limitless possibilities of 75 Morton doggy swag…
With respect,
Jacqui
